Rumors are floating around with Apple planning to launch a smaller version of the iPad, called iPad Mini, around seven inches in length, to counter the release of Kindle Fire.

Is Apple getting threatened by this new entry level tablet?

iPad Mini on 2012? | My iPad Games BlogIn case you are not informed yet, Kindle Fire will be released by November 2011 and will be sold for only $199.00. That is relatively affordable compared to the lowest retail price of an iPad at $499.00.

Apple Insider reports Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities has been scouting for suppliers in China and Taiwan and had heard rumors about an “iPad Mini” launching next year. “Mini” does not always refer to size, though, but a much more affordable piece of gadget.

The said iPad Mini will range somewhere in the mid-to-high-$200 and will potentially fend off the latest competitors, and will be followed by the release in the second quarter of 2012 of the iPad 3 which will boast a much more richer display and much more powerful processing capability than it’s predecessors.

Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said, exactly twelve months ago, that seven inch tablets are too small and added that these devices will work if these would come with sandpapers so that customers can file down their fingers to fit the seven inch screen.

Then again, Steve Jobs might have contradicted himself about this one because Taiwanese Economic Daily News had reported that Apple ordered display samples measuring 7.85 inches for the iPad Mini from Korean LG LG Display and Taiwanese AU Optronics and these two companies have already sent their samples to Apple, after being specified that  those are for the new iPad.

I find this mini iPad very intriguing — how much power will it pack? Will it be better than the first gen iPad? How about when compared to the iPad 2? Will it be overshadowed by the iPad 3? How will it compete against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus which Samsung is planning to release? How will people react to it?

Only time will tell and we can only wait and wait and wait…
